Signs of infection

Root canal treatment is generally a safe and successful procedure, but it is not without risks. Although rare, you can experience mild to severe infection after treatment. Being aware of the symptoms of infection is crucial in correcting the situation before it gets worse.

Dr. Khanna shares the following warning symptoms of infection after a root canal treatment.

• Persistent pain: Pain after root canal therapy is normal, especially after the anesthesia wears off. However, if the pain is worse after three days, it could be a sign of infection. The infection can spread from the root tip to the gums and surrounding tissues, so you should see a dentist immediately to remedy the situation.
• Fever: Fever is a natural response by your immune system when it identifies microbes in your body. If your body temperature is above 99.5 degrees, don’t take chances. Inform your dentist immediately.
• Persistent pimples on the gums: The presence of a pimple on the gums is usually one of the tell-tale signs of tooth infection. This pimple releases pus but usually gets smaller and disappears when you seek treatment. However, if the pimple lingers for 7-10 days after root canal therapy, it may be a sign that the infection is still lurking and needs a dentist’s intervention.
• Lethargy: Feeling run down after endodontic therapy is normal, but if your energy doesn’t bounce back after three days of resting, inform your dentist of remedial action.
